Is Coaching Confidential?

A common concern I hear is -"Is coaching confidential?” The short answer is yes—confidentiality is a cornerstone of the coaching relationship. This article explains what is meant by confidentiality and the scope of the agreement

The Importance of Confidentiality

Confidentiality is the cornerstone of a successful coaching relationship. For coaching to be effective, it’s essential that you feel safe to openly discuss your thoughts and experiences—without fear of judgment or your words being shared elsewhere. Whether you’re working through challenges at work, exploring your future aspirations, or reflecting on aspects of your personal life, you deserve a secure space where you can be completely honest.

how confidentiality works

Your coach is committed to protecting the privacy of the information you share. All the conversations you have with your coach are kept between the two of you. Coaches, like therapists, abide by a strict code of ethics that prioritizes client confidentiality. This commitment is what allows the coaching relationship to flourish—freeing you to speak your mind, share your goals, and unpack any challenges without worrying that your words will leave the virtual or physical room.

My clients can be sure I will never even disclose that are receiving coaching from me.  If we meet in a public space, I wait until acknowledged by them first.

The International Coaching Federation (ICF) and other professional coaching bodies uphold confidentiality as a key ethical principle. Coaches who are credentialed or trained through reputable organisations are held to these standards, meaning that your privacy is taken very seriously.

exceptions to the rule

It’s important to mention that, like in any professional setting, there are very rare circumstances where confidentiality might need to be broken—such as if there is a risk of harm to yourself or others. However, these situations are extremely uncommon, and your coach will always make an effort to discuss any concerns with you beforehand.

Trust is the foundation of any relationship, and confidentiality is at the heart of that trust.'

What if my employer is paying for my coaching?

This can feel tricky for coachees if their boss is sponsoring the coaching or if a coach comes from within your organisation.  The same rules apply, coaching conversations are always private.  The only person that can disclose the content of a coaching conversation is the person being coached.

I have agreed in the past to confirm to a line manager that a coachee is using the sessions provided.  I agreed how this would be done with both the coachee as well as their line manager.

Why it's important for you

When you know that your conversations are confidential, you can begin to engage with the coaching process in a meaningful way. You can express your thoughts without reservation, dive into the topics that matter most to you, and reflect deeply. This openness is key to personal growth, allowing the coaching space to become one where transformation truly happens.

Your coach is here to support you—not to judge, and certainly not to share your personal journey with others. The trust that builds from this confidentiality is what makes coaching such a powerful and life-changing experience.

when you are considering coaching

If you’ve been considering coaching but have held back because of concerns about privacy, rest assured that confidentiality is a foundational principle of the coaching relationship.

It’s your coach’s responsibility to create a safe environment where you can fully explore your thoughts and challenges.

Discuss a potential coach’s approach to privacy when you have your introductory conversation with this (this is sometimes called a Discovery or Chemistry call)
