"People don’t need an extravagant goal to live a meaningful life. They just need clarity about what matters most to them."
-Michael Bungay Stanier
The Power of Purpose
Finding your purpose isn’t just about having a goal; it’s about living a meaningful life. It leads to better mental and physical health, less stress, and a greater sense of well-being.
Ikigai: Your Reason for Being
The Japanese concept of ikigai is about finding the sweet spot where your passions, skills, and the world’s needs intersect. I’d taught a group about the power of personal and organisational transformation. I was talking about something I was passionate about, thoroughly enjoyed and had incredible knowledge and experience in.
One of the group suggested I’d found my Ikigai. It’s a holistic approach to purpose, encouraging balance and reminds us that purpose isn’t just about what we do, but why we do it.
Finding Your Purpose
Ready to uncover your purpose? Here are some practical steps:
- Ask yourself what brings you joy: What activities make you feel alive and connected?
- Explore the Ikigai framework: Reflect on what you love, what you’re good at, what the world needs, and what you can be paid for.
- Look for patterns: What were you doing during the most fulfilling times in your life?
- Embrace small purposes: Purposeful living can be found in small, meaningful actions.
- Reflect on your legacy: What impact do you want to leave on the world?
Living with purpose
Finding your purpose in midlife isn’t about a complete life overhaul. It’s about reconnecting with what truly matters to you.
Purpose gives life depth and meaning, helping you navigate the ups and downs with a sense of direction.
So, take your time, explore what brings you joy, and let your purpose guide you into a new exciting chapter.
